Purpose: To advertise the upcoming 50th anniversary episode of Doctor who, 'The Day of the Doctor'. The advert was designed to draw in people who perhaps weren't familiar with the series as well as appealing to fans of the long-standing franchise with a nostalgic re run of old scenes from the show.
Form: it is a TV trailer to advertise the 50th anniversary special episode.
Content: The trailer uses a very interesting style. The trailer uses still 3 dimensional scenes that are slightly animated. these animations are things like lens flares, flowing hair, debris flying through a scene. the camera pans through these still scenes. The trailer opens briefly in black and white with a film grain effect. the scene pans through a room in the midst of chaos, the screen flashes and changes to a colour scene. A voice over from the current Doctor's actor Matt Smith begins and plays for the duration of the trailer. the scene pans around through a ripple effect and over to the image of a creature from the show. lighting is used to great effect here, the beam of the weapon illuminating the scene, creating a fare effect. the next scenes follow various 3D images of the many actors who have played the title role throughout the years. floating debris, props from the show (including the many incarnations of the Sonic screwdriver prop) are visible with the voice over continuing. The camera pans up and follows several scenes of actors and props in performance of various actions with the monologue over the top. The final scene is a pan shot through a crowd of familiar actors and monster costumes, all of which featured on the show. It has several lighting and special effects here, blue light emanating from a bolt of lightning, ash and debris swirling around the scene. It hangs briefly on an image of Actor David Tennant before doing a fly by shot to a 3D rendered scene of actor Matt Smith standing in a field of debris. finishing the voice over he snatches a Screwdriver prop from the air and raises it to the sky. the scene pulls back to a title screen with the date the episode aired on.
The Monologue proceeds as follows:
"I've been running all my lives."
"Through time and space."
"Every second of every minute of every day for over 900 years."
"I fought for peace in a universe at war."
"Now the time has come to face the choices I have made in the name of the Doctor (Triple echo 'The Doctor!)"
"Our future depends on one single moment of one impossible day."
"The day I've been running from all my life."
"The day of the Doctor."
The monologue is the only speech in the whole trailer.
The sound track is an originally composed piece, written for the trailer and copyright of the BBC. producing their own music negates any issue of copyright infringement. The sound track is a remixed version of the Doctor Who theme, heavily modified to make it almost unrecognisable but not so much as it became unfamiliar. it is synced to the trailer, meaning it picks up and drops as the visual images do.
Sound effects were well utilised throughout. All sound effects are taken from the show and are commonly used as well as being registered trademarks of the BBC. The trailer opens with the sound effect for the 'TARDIS' clearly audible. The famous EXTERMINATE sound effect is used, as well as a modulated Dalek voice exclaiming "The Doctor!"there are several uses of reoccurring undefined machine sounds commonly used throughout the show as well. this adds a good feel to the trailer helping it stay true to the Doctor Who formula.
